MER 20120529 06

Here one of the Mars Exploration Rovers is nestled on the lander that brought it to the Martian surface. The rover was sent to Mars folded up and the petals on the side of the lander close in to form a tetrahedron. After entering the atmosphere, parachutes and retro-rockets slowed the rover down. Before touchdown, a series of airbags inflated around the tetrahedron and the whole thing bounced around for a while before coming to a stop and unfolding.
