RAT 010 ~~~ The Brown Rat ~~~

The Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus

Although its binominal name suggests the Brown Rat to be Norwegian in origin, this is, in fact, incorrect. The Brown Rat came to Europe from central Asia, possibly China. This rodent is now present on every continent except Antartica and is the most successful mammal on the planet after humans.

It has been said that you are never more than 10 feet from a rat. This phrase is meant to indicate how large the unseen population of rats can be. Well I find it difficult to get within 10 feet of one and they don't wait around for photographers.
