      Unless the shielding is carrying high voltage DC for repeaters, it seems a bit wasteful for all that metal to be in there if these cables are trenched.
      To me, it seems like PEX style conduit and the same type of SM fiber would be much cheaper, and then you could bury several links, a few kilometers apart.

      Then again, I'm not an engineer, so I'll let you get back to making transcontinental Interwebernets faster.
