Douban Jiang Comparison
I was happy to find Pixian Toban Jiang (on the left) at my chinese supermarket.
Normally I use the Lee Kum Kee Toban Jiang (in the middle).
But unfortunately I didn't like it at all!!!!
Luckily I was already alarmed by the smell. And as I was craving for MaPo tofu and I had plenty of ingredients I decided to make just a minimum amount first with the new Pixian Douban. And I didn't like it! It had the smell of chinese white wine, Maotai. Brrrrrrrr. And I didn't like the colour either.
I was so happy I hadn't spoilt everything and I could just make it my way. :)
But, I haven't given up on it completely. There was another brand of pixian douban jiang in the chinese supermarket. Looking quite similar but a little bit more expensive. (1.20 instead of 0.80 or something like that. I just thought this one looked more authentic, hihi)
I think that same brand also was sold in jars.
I will try those next time. And add it to the photo.
But for now I'm happy with mister Lee Kum Kee. :)
PS I added the 3rd brand in this picture. I'll try it later.
