The Henry Clay Oak (circa 1650)

Legend has it that planter, statesman, orator, and presidential candidate Henry Clay (1777-1852) who visited here in 1844, sat under this oak and wrote a letter proclaiming his opposition to the annexation of Texas. Many historians believe that this position cost him the election of 1844.

The plaque in this photo was erected in 1939.
