Having traipsed all the way to Hadleigh on foot, I did not take many shots because there were way too many people and children climbing over the ruins despite it being dull and rather chilly (as a rule I do not take photographs with children in shot).

======================================================

Hadleigh Castle was built circa 1215 by Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent. The Castle is constructed from Kentish ragstone with a seashell mortar.

Hadleigh Castle was seized from De Burgh when he was imprisoned by King Henry III in 1239 and was retained as a Royal Castle until 1551, when it was sold to Lord Richard Rich who dismantled much of the original Castle for it's valuable stone.

Ownership of the ruins remained with Rich's descendants up until 1891 when it was purchased by William Booth for the Salvation Army. In 1948 the Salvation Army gave Hadleigh Castle to the Government and it is now owned and maintained by English Heritage as a Grade I listed historic ruin alongside Hadleigh Castle Country Park managed by Essex County Council.
