Antique Escalator (Reno-style)
An antique escalator based on the original design by Reno, at the flagship Strawbridge & Clothier department store in Center City Philadelphia.

The escalator, based on the original design by Jesse W. Reno and manufactured by Otis, doesn't really have steps as we know it. It's more of an inclined belt with wooden slats. The manufacturer's plate pictured reads "Cleat Type". A few of these were in use in the Boston subway until 1994. When these pictures were taken in 1996, it was probably the last escalator of its kind in the world.

The flagship Strawbridge's store closed in 2006. The fate of this unique escalator is unknown.
