March 1, 2012 - Day 14

To put it simply, today sucked. Decided to go snowboarding with some friends and things ended badly to say the least. We were at Breckenridge and decided to go down Whales Tail after you get up Imperial Express and traverse across the back edge into the back side of Base 7. Well going down the bowl I noticed a perfectly untouched shoot that I had to take. As soon as I began going down the shoot, it turned into a nightmare. What seemed like a perfect powder field was actually a boulder field covered by blow over unpacked snow, meaning there was no base. As soon as I started going down the shoot, my nose caught a boulder and threw me head over heels on my board. I ended up landing on a boulder with my hip and knee and my hand getting caught in between two other boulders. In the process of this terrific wipeout I fractured third metacarpal in my left hand, bruised my hip bone, and might have torn something in my knee.
Though moments like these are gut wrenching and horrific while snowboarding, it won't stop me. One of the main reasons I came to CU was for the mountains and honestly things like this make me want to go the mountain much more and keep boarding. But moments like these in life are needed. A reality check where you realize you're not invincible or amazing as you think you are. The moment where your luck runs out and the world comes tumbling down, literally in this case. But we need those small moments in life where your heart skips a beat, that feeling you get right before you fall back out of your chair. These small moments remind us that we are human. That we have faults, but just as importantly we have our assets and truths. The moments in life where we realize we're just an insignificant part of this planet but yet we are still a component that plays a vital role in humanity.
