Hallhead (2)

Mains of Hallhead stands nearly a mile off the road, up a long private track, a couple of miles south of Leochel-Cushnie; about 3 miles west of the incomparable Craigievar Castle, and a couple of miles north-west of the ruins of Corse Castle. It is no coincidence that there are so many fortified houses round here, this area having been for centuries on the edge of the wild and lawless Highlands - from where at any time, godless men were likely to descend without warning to steal your daughters and rape your sheep!

When my (long suffering) wife and I emerged from the trees after our long walk up the drive, I was expecting Hallhead to look much the same as it had when I was last here - more than 30 years ago. So it was a pleasent surprise to find renovations newly completed, landscaping still in progress and a family once again in occupation (with a Landrover to get through the winter snow drifts!).
