“It may have been as a result of these depredations that Lumsden built, or strengthened and enlarged, the strong house or 'house of defence' from which the present building has developed. What is clear is that the tradition that the original house was destroyed by Strachan has little foundation in history. Such a destruction would certainly have been recorded in the 1548 charter: in any case it was much easier to drive off stock than to break into and burn down stone houses. Indeed the former was a perfectly proper way to behave whilst the latter incurred a certain degree of social censure.” (H Gordon Slade)
I particularly like the last sentence!!
