Albert Chalcroft, The King's Regiment, Landi Kotal, Khyber Pass, 1937
Images of my grandfather, Albert, taken on a Box Brownie by his pal. Albert features in many of the images (see my notes). The original photos are quite small, but have amazing detail. Albert passed away in 1976, and these images were given to me by his sister Louisa Hicks (Swanley, Kent) in the 1990's. I decided to scan them and make them publicly available, as a memorial to my grandad, who despite his tough life, was a gentle and kind soul, many special memories with him in Formby (Lonsdale Road). Born in Carshalton with his sister, Louisa, both their parents died when they were young. Albert and Louisa were sent to live with Aunt Rose in Peckham (Hooks Road). To escape unhappy times in Peckham, Albert lied about his age and joined the Kings Regiment. Albert also served in Gibraltar. He was the best grandad a kid could wish for..
