Pink-rumped Rosefinch - Carpodacus eos - 曙红朱雀

A pause in the rain and I pushed through the alpine shrubbery near Nangqian in southeastern Qinghai, trying to get close to the bird. Good thing I had a full rain suit (jacket and pants) or I would have been soaked through. Not a fun prospect in the cold mountain air!

This species is also known as Stresemann's Rosefinch, a nomenclature confusion that seems to plague the family generally. This made it hard for me to learn the different rosefinches, some of them having two or more common names and uncertain species status according to the competing taxonomists.

In any event the Tibetan Plateau is ground zero for rosefinch diversity, yielding us 10 different beautiful species.
