Black-Hooded Sunbeam - Aglaeactis pamela - Colibrí Negrito

The Black-Hooded Sunbeam - Aglaeactis pamela - is endemic to Bolivia, found only in a thin band of cloud forest stretching from Cochabamba to La Paz. Our guide Sandro led us to his spot for them, a little pull off past the town of Siberia on the old road to Cochabamba.

He indicated we had a good chance of seeing them and, if the flowers were low, an opportunity to obtain eye-level photographs. Alas, the large orange flowers they seemed to prefer had bloomed and died beside the road. The big blossoms were doing better higher up and allowed us great scope views of this rare hummer - but no stunning photographs.
