Brooklands: bus stop (2)

Brooklands is...or rather, WAS...the northernmost suburb of Christchurch.

The settlement was built on former swamp land beside Brooklands Lagoon, part of the Waimakariri River mouth.

In the 1960s, Brooklands was a ramshackle settlement of fibrolite houses, and well-built dwellings were almost a talking point. 50 years on, houses were much more substantial.

However the damage sustained in the 2010/2011 Christchurch EQs resulted in the government buying up land and houses - the land deemed economically unviable to support housing - thus effectively wiping the suburb off the map.

Drive through the area now, and you'll see very few houses left...even less that're still occupied. You'd be waiting forever to catch a bus in Brooklands...

Update: this bus stop has now also been demolished.
