Canterbury: Waipara Hotel (est.1860)

I/s of Waipara Flat Road (SH7) and Glenmark Drive, Canterbury.

(Aug.2011) You can't miss the Waipara, as you return from your weekend away in Hanmer Springs.

The historic pub is one of the oldest licensed premises in NZ, having held a continuous liquor licence since 1860.

But the times, they are a-changin'...and in this area, pubs see more folk just dropping in for a meal, than the farmer and his son ending their hard day with a few pints of ale. There are many seasonal vineyard workers from the Philippines and Sth.America working nearby, who prefer to send their money home, rather than spend it on beer...

(June 2014) ...so the pub sold - uninsured - at auction on 13 June, and accidentally went up in flames on 16 June! The accomodation block, a favourite with long-haul truckers, was destroyed.
