Venice appeared, as in a recurring dream . .
“Venice appeared to me as in a recurring dream, a place once visited and now fixed in memory like images on a photographer’s plates so that my return was akin to turning the leaves of a portfolio: a scene of the gondolas moored by the railway station; the Grand Canal in twilight; the Rialto bridge; the Piazza San Marco; the shimmering, rippling wonderland; the bustling water traffic; the fish market; the Lido beach and boardwalk; Teeny in the launch; the singing, gesturing gondoliers; the bourgeois tourists drinking coffee at Florian’s; the importunate beggars; the drowned girl’s ghost haunting the Bridge of Sighs; the pigeons, mosquitoes and fetor of decay.”
― Gary Inbinder, The Flower to the Painter
📗 On my first visit to Venice, I experienced all this, and more.
It felt as if I was in a dreamlike state. Each reference in the quote above, was seen ~ felt ~and lived by me. Completely enamoured and totally in love and awe with the city.
This time, not so much so. Tourism has took over !! But then, anyone who has been fortunate enough to visit this city, will know its attraction... it’s lure... it’s fascination.
So over the years, a monster has been created :-) ...but I have to say, possibly one of the gentlest kind.
Did I go on a gondola?? Nooooooo waaaaaay.
It was my intention, but after 30 minutes waiting in the queue (left of picture), panic set in 😓 Folk of all ages, were wobbling, trying to keep their balance. My vision of going overboard, was not a pleasant one 😩.........so I fled ...up the street, faster than I ever thought I could run 😂
💛 You know by now, what I’m going to say... “do kindly ADD yourself to the picture”. For as explained before... I took you all along with me.
😓 Apologies. Flickr seems to be having technical problems, (checked the help forum, and yes, others have reported)... or my picture picked up vibes from me, running down Venice 😅 but have experienced many hitches since uploading.
So I set it to private..... and of course lost the faves. Most importantly, your few comments remain:-)
So I’m opening it up again, and we’ll see what happens.💛
