WEKA australis 1202

Weka, Stewart Island Weka, Gallirallus australis scotti, 53 cm. / 21 in. Flightless, locally COMMON ENDEMIC bird of forests, scrub and open country with good cover. The Stewart Island sub-species is more rufous than Weka sub-species farther north. Different chick than in the previous post.

 

Feeding on the beach of Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary, Stewart Island, Southland Region, New Zealand.
