jornada_swifttalk

The Jornada showing the Switfttalker application (from Cepstral). This application is a very simple text-to-speech word processor. You can get individual voices for it separately; I've currently got the "Diane" voice loaded.

I downloaded the voice and application from the Cepstral website using my desktop PC and then "beamed" it to the Jornada 720 using the IRda port.

The file transfer was no problem, but I had a bit of a nasty surprise when I went to try and run the application and found out the hard way that "Handheld PC" (the version of CE the Jornada uses) and "Pocket PC" are NOT the same thing.

Luckily, though, they're similar enough such that most PocketPC applications can be run on HandheldPCs if you install the right .dlls on your HandheldPC. And more luckily still, there are a lot of nice people on the Internet who share my fascination with obsolete hardware and who had copies of .dlls available for download. I basically went through the .exe file for Swifttalker in a text editor and found out what .dlls it was trying to call, and installed those. It was fun making something work that wasn't "supposed" to work. :)
