1. Simulation of a nuclear fuel element

The research image submitted here is part of a project which involved simulations of the

swirling 3D flow in an accurately-represented 360o section of an AGR fuel passage. To date,

there is no other 3D simulation of this type and therefore the outcome of this project attracted

a lot of interest from the nuclear industry.

In the submitted image, the relative pressure on the wall boundaries of the fuel pins is shown.

In the selected pressure contour, high and low pressure zones which are formed upstream and

downstream of each rib are clearly displayed. It can also be seen that the maximum flow

resistance occurs around the inner ring of fuel pins.
