Sacramento City, J Street, looking West, 1860s

J Street has long acted as one of the major streets of the city. Here is a photograph of the street taken sometime in the 1860s. In 1860 the Pony Express started service between Sacramento and St. Joseph Missouri. In 1861 the first transcontinental telegraph message is transmitted to Sacramento's Pioneer Telegraph Building on Second Street.
