Sue is an artist and art teacher who is teaching at the Broken Hill Youth College, a school for students who have difficulty remaining in mainstream high school. Apart from art, she teaches english, geography, history and sport, as well as cooking, sewing and health. She loves teaching these 'difficult' kids as she finds it rewarding and challenging, and likes to think that she makes a difference.
She came out here at the beginning of last year as a visiting artist and stayed at the Broken Hill Art Exchange in Duff St. She found a job almost immediately in her first teaching position and is still there more than a year later, and is still living at the art exchange.
She has enjoyed living here and is meeting so many interesting people, both locals and those from 'away'. The art exchange has so many cool people visiting from all over the world, and is constantly stimulating and challenging her creativity. Her job keeps her on her toes. She finds the social scene here is akin to an overseas ex patriot scene with many like minded people living here. She loves the scenery and the feeling of isolation here, "it's like being on a ship in an ocean of desert".
If she had an extra hour each day she would like to imagine she would paint or play the piano, though in reality she would probably spend it on the computer.
The advice that she remembers is......''when you dont know what to do about something bothering you, dont do anything at all, as things have a way of working themselves out in the end''. It is also important to ''do what you like, and like what you do"
