Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra) Identification by its Bud

Sometimes the best way to identify a deciduous tree is by its buds. This is the tip of a Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra) branch, growing in early September in a swamp at Distant Hill Gardens. Notice the space between the terminal bud and the first leaves. This is an identifier of Black Ash. White Ash has no space. Here is an image of a White Ash bud: flic.kr/p/dX7Agx
