White Ash (Fraxinus americana) Identification by its Bud

Sometimes the best way to identify a deciduous tree is by its buds. This is the tip of a White Ash (Fraxinus americana) branch, growing in early September in the woods at Distant Hill Gardens. Notice there is no space between the terminal bud and the first leaves. This is an identifier of White Ash. Black Ash has a 1/4 inch space. Here is an image of a Black Ash bud: flic.kr/p/dX7Ame
