American Spikenard

American Spikenard (Aralia racemosa) is one of my favorite native plants growing in the woods at Distant Hill Gardens.

American Spikenard grows in rich woodlands in moist soils and light shade. It is very variable in size in our woods, from a 1 foot tall specimen growing on a calcium-rich boulder, to a 6 foot (2 meter) beauty on a very moist, rich site.

American Spikenard's large roots are aromatic and spicy, they were once used as one of the ingredients in root beer and as a remedy for respiratory ailments in man and domesticated animals.
