Ostrich Fern - An Edible Native

Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) is a beautiful tall native fern that grows up to 6 feet (2 meters) in some of the wet areas of Distant Hill Gardens. It produces edible 'fiddleheads' in the spring.

The smaller ferns surrounding the taller ostrich fern are Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis), so called because they are very sensitive to frost.
