American Cranberry Bush (Viburnum trilobum)
Our American Cranberry Bush (Viburnum trilobum), also known as Highbush Cranberry, is loaded with red berries this year. While the other berry-producing shrubs in the gardens have been picked clean by the birds by now (mid November), this native viburnham has tart berries that need a number of freeze-thaw cycles to become tasty enough for most birds. Because of this fact, it is an excellent wildlife shrub providing a much needed food source during the winter and early spring when there is not much else to eat.
