Spotted Wintergreen (Chimaphila maculata)

Chimaphila maculata (spotted wintergreen, also known as striped wintergreen, striped prince's pine or rheumatism root) is a small 4-10 in tall (10-25 cm), perennial evergreen herb native to eastern North America and Central America. We have a number of these beautiful native plants in the woods of Distant Hill Gardens.

Native Americans used Spotted Wintergreen for a variety of medicinal purposes including as a poultice for rheumatism, and for the treatment of colds and fevers.
