Umbrella Plant (Podophyllum peltatum)

Umbrella Plant (Podophyllum peltatum), a cultivated spring ephermerial at Distant Hill Gardens, has an interesting habit of unfurling its large leaves much like opening an umbrella. Hence the common name.

This eastern North American native is also known by a great number of other common names, including mayapple, hogapple, Indian apple, mayflower, wild lemon (flavor of the fruit), wild mandrake, American mandrake (shape of rhizomes) and devil's apple.
