Theinhardt 1890

Type specimen book, Ferd. Theinhardt Schriftgiesserei, Berlin, ca. 1890

Hauptprobe der Ferd. Theinhardt Schriftgiesserei, Berlin, ca. 1890

Dated with the help of the "Vignetten" section. A large vignette shows a "Prost Neujahr 1889" (Happy New Year 1889"). On two pages in the "Initials" chapter "1890" is to be seen. Interesting is that most examples in this specimen show Jerusalemer Str. as adress for the Theinhardtsche foundry, but on one page the adress is Linienstr. I could not find any hint in other sources for a relocation, but sources tell of a big order: They were part of a project to recast all of the National press’s matrices on "Normalsystem" from 1880-1881 (together with the foundry of the National Press and another foundry in Berlin).

On history (1849-1908)

The type foundy Theinhardt was founded in 1849 by Ferdinand Theinhardt. In January 1908 the Theinhardt foundry was sold to Berthold, their factory was moved to Bertholds premises in 1910. Theinhardt was known for delivering type faces for the Reichsdruckerei (National Press) and for producing printing type for a couple of "exotic", oriental writing systems.

A later specimen of Theinhardt in my collection:
