Provenance Online Project
Bookplates, inscriptions, stamps, bindings, binding waste and shelfmarks ... they're all here, and they all need to be identified!
This photostream contains images of marks of ownership found in books in the University of Pennsylvania Rare Book & Manuscript Library.
We are trying to identify former owners and virtually reunite dispersed collections, and we welcome any information you have about the images posted here. We're always happy to have help deciphering messy and illegible handwriting, and if you can pin dates to a person's name please tell us! Comments from heraldry buffs willing to supply names and blazons for unidentified coats of arms are especially welcome!
If you're more inclined to transcribe and identify binding waste check out the Binding Waste set. If you want to relax and describe woodcuts, take a look at the Woodcuts and Engravings set.
Images of some of our favorite animals and mythic creatures are in the Bestiary, and the Abecedarium contains some pretty cool early initials.
Feel free to re-use any of the images--they are all Creative Commons Attribution, so just drop us a line so that we know (and can write about it in our annual report!).
