The 'New' Luna Park
There's been all kinds of talk flying around for years about what was going to happen at Coney Island. Everything from a giant enclosed mall to luxury condos has been thrown around, and it would seem that every shady developer this side of the Mississipi has thrown a set of blueprints on the fire.
Astroland unceremoniously disappeared last year, and was just replaced by 'Luna Park', which was supposed to be a futuristic replacement. As a long time Coney Island junky, I had to go check it out for myself. I was very underwhelmed with the 'New Luna Park'. A few new, soulless rides were added in the old Astroland space, but that's about it. Large sections of the boardwalk are currently closed off, and in major states of disrepair. Many old Coney Island stalwarts, are gone.
On the positive side, the place was absolutely packed, and the beach, which has always been the main draw, is still great.
What is going to happen to the place overall is still very up in the air.
