An interesting story to this photograph. This fighter was facing an Australian novice called Bosko, whose first fight it was and had only been training in Muay Thai for eight days prior. The Burmese fighter pictured here therefore entered the ring quite cockey, joking with his friends. He had a quick wake up call in the first round. The Burmese fighter went on to win the match by judges decision.
Thai boxing is one of the most popular sports in Thailand with a huge following. Most villages will boast a gym and arena and large crowds often congrigate to watch matches.
The idea is to defeat your opponent by knock out or by scoring points. Despite the heavy impact of punches and kicks, elbow and knee blows score more points. The fact that the combatant has to use fists, kicks, elbows and knees has meant that Muay Thai is referred to as the art of eight limbs.
