These little guys were all over a Spanish style church, spiraling around the entrance pillars.

 

This is a Putto (plural putti) and not a cherub.

 

Putti originated in Greek/Roman (non-Christian) mythology and were decidedly non-angelic as originally defined.

 

Cherubim (Cherubs) are mentioned in the Old Testament, and look nothing like Putti.

 

No, I have no idea why English confuses the two.
