Astounding Science Fiction (Oct., 1939). Cover Art by Hubert Rogers

“Grey Lensman” was originally published in four parts from October 1939 to January 1940 in Astounding magazine. It was first published in book form in 1951 by Fantasy Press and it is the fourth volume in E.E. Smith’s Lensman series. Kimball Kinnison, featured on the cover of the magazine, is the most powerful Lensman in the service of the Galactic Patrol. The Galactic Patrol was an elite military force and interstellar law-enforcement agency charged with the defense and preservation of Civilization. The Lensman series was a continuing “space opera” published in the magazines Amazing and Astounding between 1934 and 1948. The entire series was then collected and reworked into the better-known series of books by E.E. ‘Doc’ Smith, six in all, published between 1948 and 1954.
