## Update: Cleaned up the image a bit — some areas where 'sprinkled' with false info :) ##

A map which puts the connections of facebook users into context and shows where other social networks have the upper hand.

Interesting. I've heard MySpace is much bigger in Asia than facebook, and this map would seem to suggest that's a possibility.
  • Thorsten Gätz 5y

Hunter Wolfe I have more detailed information on the 50 or so biggest social networks, but for this graph i wanted to emphasize the aesthetics, yet explain some of the bigger 'holes' in the map.

To name some figures: 1.6% of internet users visit myspace on any given day, compared to facebook's 38%.

THANK you. The facebook map, though pretty, was easy to misinterpret.
  • ecp98rjs 5y

Just to be clear, from your definition, the red areas are those where 'other social networks dominate' OR 'no-one is using social networks at all'?
  • Thorsten Gätz 5y

ecp98rjs yes, although I plan on showing the strength of other networks (like in a tactical map), facebook is the first network to make such a dataset publicly available.

If you're interested, I also have maps of places where Facebook is filtered and places where Internet penetration is lower than 10%: jilliancyork.com/2010/12/15/facebook-use-access-filtering...

how is this hard to interpret?

black represents the connection between friends, and red is population density of over 2 persons per square mile. can't really get much simpler for interpreting

and i say this as a cartographer.

It seems that the map shown here has a different data set than the one in FlowingData, why?

I overlayed them for demonstration, turquoise are in both, red is missing from Flickr image:
  • Thorsten Gätz 5y

Chris Helenius I updated this image because some people noticed some smaller errors in the map. Should have updated the description of the image! Thanks for calling it to my attention :)
  • gausseliminering 5y

I wonder if population density is the best context for the map. I just launched my new blog with a post about a comparison with urbanization over at lookingatdata.blogspot.com/2010/12/facebook-friendships-a...

Let me know what you think!
  • Michael Litman 5y

    So awesome.
  • floncke 4y

Hi Thorsten, what software you use for this kind of graphical info? Thanks and regards. Francois
  • Bohua XU 4y

    which software are you using?
  • GlobalCoil 4y

Can this data be used to visualize which friendships are local or regional and which are international? I have been told that the percentage of Facebook friends beyond national borders is small and those beyond continental borders is miniscule. Can anyone point me to data which confirms or denies? Thank you!
