Dirty old town

It's a popular misconception that the song "Dirty old town" was written about Dublin or Belfast. It was actually written by Ewan MacColl, a Salford man of Scottish parentage (and the father of the late and wonderful Kirsty MacColl), about his home town. It didn't do all that well until initially the Dubliners and latterly the Pogues got a hold of it, and turned it into an anthemic hit. The above shot is of the regenerated Salford docks area, home to modern high rises, the Lowry Centre and BBC Media City.
