Bombay Beach, Imperial County, California
A castoff couch at the shores of the Salton Sea (actually a lake), Bombay Beach, Imperial County, California. Whenever I look at these photos, I can smell the dead fish that covered the beach.
The Salton Sea, while partly protected as a bird refuge, is one of the most environmentally degraded areas in California. Bombay Beach is uninhabitable in the summer months, with temperatures reaching into the 120s F. The real estate is cheap (for California) so some people tough it out.
I took this photo almost two years ago. Then I saw the same couch in a photo-essay website called Ignant.com. The essay is worth looking at.
