Across the Frozen Zanskar
Zanskar’s winter, a season of ferocity, demands that men return to primal ways for survival. First among them is food. Following their ancestors’ footsteps, men from the far-flung village of Zanskar, set out on a 12-day march across a frozen river to Leh to bring back food and fuel that will keep their families alive through five months of winter. The crossing is dangerous and the only constant company, people say, is death.
