This was one of the "prizes of the day". I have to confess I was not the first to see this American Woodcock, a most secretive nocturnal bird. It blended almost perfectly with the leaf clutter, faced away from the trail, and hid behind the proliferation of garlic mustard plants.
Patience. It became a waiting game. He moved a leg, opened an eye, then popped behind the vegetation. Over and over again. It took 45 minutes to wait him out. Most of the other people had long gone. My camera became very heavy, but I was rewarded with this life bird photograph.
