Black Skimmer

About 50 Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) were seen preening, bathing, sleeping and flying about a tide pool on Lighthouse Beach, Sanibel Island, Florida, USA.

These birds have most unusual bills (if you have time, look at the picture in large size). The lower mandible is much longer, which it uses to "skim" the water when it flies low over the water with it's mouth open.

It's a fairly large bird, about 18 inches long, and is very striking in appearance, especially when it's with 50 of it's friends and relatives : )
