for ODC Group 3 - 'look what I found/saw'
Koalas are rarely awake and I'd observed this one for a number of hours (intermittently) Was finally rewarded with something a little more exciting than Rip Van Winkle.
The koala is possibly one of the best known Australian animals, and is found in four states: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The word 'koala' comes from an Australian Aboriginal word meaning 'no drink' as koalas generally drink no water, just the juice from the eucalyptus leaves. During the last Victorian fires when many lives and homes were lost there was a renowned photo being circulated of koalas drinking from swimming pools and even a firefighters water bottle as their homes had been incinerated and they were desperate.
It belongs to a special group of Australian mammals, called marsupials, the females having a pouch where the baby animal lives after it is born in order to complete their development.
