Vaccinium “lanceolatum” (O`ahu type). Hawai`i, O`ahu, Ko`olau Mountains, the ridge between Kahana Valley and Makaua Gulch. Plant 1.

Vaccinium (taxon) “lanceolatum” (O`ahu type)

Equivalent names for Vaccinium “lanceolatum”: Vaccinium dentatum Smith var. lanceolatum (A. Gray) Skottsberg

Hawaiian names: `ōhelo

Family: Ericaceae

Habit: a prostrate shrub.

Endemic to O`ahu (Wai`anae and Ko`olau Mountains). Vaccinium “lanceolatum” as a whole occurs on at least Kaua`i, O`ahu, East Moloka`i, and West Maui.

Vaccinium “lanceolatum” (O`ahu type) usually occurs in shrubland or on open, exposed slopes or ridge tops in zones ranging from wet-side mesic to moderately wet. However, I found it once in the very wet zone of the Ko`olau Mountains, where it was growing in an area that receives enough precipitation to support populations of V. dentatum var. dentatum and V. pahalae. This was in Kaluanui on the windward side of the mountain range.
