PzKpfw V Panther Ausf. A
By the end of 1941 it had become clear to the German General Staff that something had to be done to redress the armored balance with Russia. This was tilting in the Russians' favor thanks to the T-34, which was more than a match for the Panzer IV. Two German companies- Daimler Benz and MAN of Augsburg- were given the task of designing a new tank, and the MAN design was accepted in may 1942. By september 1942, a prototype was being tested and the vehicle, designated Panzerkampfwagen !V Panther (SdKfz 171) was ordered into immediate production.
The Panther was first used in the battle of Kursk in July 1943 and did not perform well. It was plaged with a number of problems. On July 10, only 38 Panthers where seviceable out 200 deployed to the XLVIII Panzer Korps. Once these problems were solved, however, the Panther was a formidable fighting machine. It was also used by the French army after WWII.
