Florida Scrub Jay - Aphelocoma coerulescens, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida

I've been trying to see one of these beautiful birds for years. I was told you had to call for them, "a sort of squawk with spit". So I tried. Imagine my surprise when a stunning blue and gray bird flew out of the pine tree, straight at my eyes. I closed my eyes, anticipating an Alfred Hitchcock "The Birds" scenario, and it landed on my head. It scratched around my head for about a minute, then flew off to the post where this picture was taken. The other people in the parking lot were just killing themselves laughing. This is apparently fairly common, but it was a big surprise for me.
