Large monument in the chapel of St Edmund in Westminster Abbey to Sir Richard Pecksall 1571, his 2 wives Alianor Paulet & Alianor Cotgrave & 4 co-heiress daughters.

The central latin inscription translates:www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/P81FWm0g12

"To God and future ages. Here rests, expecting the glorious Resurrection of Christ, Richard Pecksall, Knight, excellent in his religion and probity;

He married first Alianor, daughter of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, and Lord Treasurer of England, who bore him four daughters.

His second wife was Alianor, daughter of John Cotgrave, and after his death married to Sir John Savage Knight of the county of Chester; who out of respectful regard towards her dear husband, and in perpetual memory of their marriage faith, hath, at his charge, freely and willingly erected this monument".

 

Below his two wives are Latin verses:

"Death cannot disjoin whom Christ hath joined in love. Life leads to death, and death to life above".

"In Heaven is a happier place, frail things despise. Live well, to gain of future life the prize".

 

Heraldry: argent on a cross formy fleury engrailed sable between four Cornish choughs proper, a mullet or, for difference ( Pecksall) impaling sable a lion rampant guardant or, langued gule, with a motto and the crest of a Triton's head.

 

Above his 1st wife (RHS) is sable 3 swords in point, proper (Paulet) impaling gules a lion rampant between 3 cross crosslets fitchee or ( Capel).

Above his 2nd wife (LHS) gules a fess dancette ermine between 3 bugle horns, stringed or (Cotgrave) impaling 4 ermine in cross, a crescent for difference.

 

Sir Richard born c 1500 was the son of Ralph Pexall / Pecksall dc1538 & Edith daughter of William Brocas of Beaurepaire, Hants

He was Master of the Royal Buckhounds, a post he inherited from his mother's Brocas family.

 

He m1 Alianor / Eleanor 1508 - 1558 daughter of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, by Elizabeth daughter of William Capel, Lord Mayor of London & Margaret daughter of Sir John Arundell and Lady Catherine Stafford

Eleanor was a rich widow & having no children by her, Sir John settled her extensive lands on his 2nd surviving son Edward.

The monument was re-painted c1958
