who served late Quene Elizabeth thirty yeares

as Searcher & Collector in this porte.,

and who besides (as in record appeares)

was sometimes alderman justice of peace,

and mayor here, His travayles all did cease .

His first wife Joane to Thomas Parker borne

of Norwich (wheare her vitall thread made breach)

Mathew thear sonne (but now her dayes are worne)

Maried Sarah daughter to Richard Leach

Her moother matchd with Thomas Boston who

was likewise mayor and from like frendes did floe

This Mathew Clarck by Sarah , children had

Two daughters here are with earthes mantle clad

Hoc posuit Mat Clarck" (erected by Mathew Clarck)

 

"Here lyeth Mathew Clarck Master o f Arts, of Christs College in the famous Universetie of Cambridge Twise Burgess of the Earlam Howse, Twise manor of this towne. A learned, wise and religious magistrate whose gain in heaven is , our loss in earth

This Mathew was the sonne of Richard Clark, took to his second wife Triphosa the widdowe of that worthy man of God Mr George Estey of Bury, & had by her foure sons. He died being 49 yeares old, the first of May 1623

 

Richard Clarck died 4th February 1602 aged 67

Joane his wife died Norwich 5th December 1587 aged 47

Sarah wife of Mathew Clarck died 16th … 1604 aged 40

Sarah daughter of Mathew Clarck died June 29th 1599 aged ..

Sarah daughter of Mathew Clarck aged 15 died December 15th … aged ……...

Beate Mortui, quies conta laborious" (Blessed are the dead, ceased from their labours)

 

Monument erected c1605 by Matthew after the death of his 1st wife Sarah Leach & her other Joanna Boston

 

Left Richard Clarck (1535-1602) and wife Joan 1587 daughter of Thomas Parker of Norwich

Right: Son Matthew Clarck (1564-1623) kneeling with his 1st wife Sarah 1604 daughter of Richard Leach, with their 2 sons in front & 3 then living daughters behind

Possibly Joanna Boston d1605 mother of Sarah lies below literally gathering dust .

Matthew m2 Triphosa widow of George Estey of Bury having 4 more sons probably they were born after the monument was erected

Matthew outlived this monument he erected by 19 years.

 

Three coloured Shields,

Top shield - Gules, a saltire engrailed between four nags' head couped or, Clark impaling, Gules, on a chevron between three keys erect,- as many estoiles sable (Parker. Gules, on a chevron between three keys, the wards upwards, argent,

as many mullets of the field/' (granted to Matt. Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury.)
