The last Inch

    Newer Older

One of the things that women had to contend with in the 50's was straight skirts.
Unlike today, these skirts were not open halfway up the back, but usually only had a small knife pleat to aid walking.
Maneuvers like getting into cars or onto a bus usually exceeded the width of the skirt, women who wore 'Tight skirts' in the 1950's had to learn the tricks of coping with the limited movement that they had in them.
Note the seamed nylons and the thick, Prue stiletto heels of the early 50's.
Women trying to squeeze the last inch out of their straight skirts is one of the things that I miss about the fifties.

I have ripped so many skirts this way ! I must not have perfected the techinque ,,

I believe the correct way to do it, is to sit in first and swing your legs in afterwards.

In the Rainer Werner Fassbinder film, 'Lola' (Now available on DVD) The leading lady who is wearing a 1950's skirt suit, demonstrates the correct way to get in an out of a big American convertible, if you're wearing a tight skirt.

If you are a fan of 1950's tight skirts or just a lady who keeps breaking her straight skirts, (you know who you are) this DVD is a must for your collection.

Bum in first - thighs together -knee together - heels together - swing legs in
