Bilston Blast Furnace - Toppling

A sad but historic moment in the history of British Steel and a sign of things to come. This was the second of my pictures of the blast furnace at the works in Spring Vale Bilston, Wolverhampton, as the furnace starts to fall after an explosive charge was let off to start its destruction. The Steelworks closed in 1979 and the furnace was destroyed on 5th October 1980. I remember going to see its demise and took these pictures in quick succession as it fell to the ground. it was all over in a matter of seconds. It was quite a sad moment really watching it fall, especially for the many who had lost their jobs at the works.
