Let's Be Avenue
Station Avenue, New Earswick, one of the first streets constructed for Joseph Rowntree's north York model village. The houses date from 1902-04. Rowntree, a confectionery tycoon, aimed to give all the city's workers - not just his own - better housing than provided by the slums of central York. He insisted each house had a fruit tree and space to grow vegetables. Trees were planted on the grass verges. Indeed, most of the village's streets were named after trees.
