UK Border Agency sham marriage raid

    Newer Older

When this 21-year-old bride was whisked away following her wedding at Sheffield Town Hall it was in cuffs and by officers from the UK Border Agency who foiled her sham marriage to an Afghan national. A sham marriage typically occurs when a non-European national marries someone from the European Economic Area, including the UK, as means of attempting to gain long-term residency and the right to work and claim benefits. The UK Border Agency targets such sham marriages with 300 enforcement operations and 230 people prosecuted in 2011.
